STRATIGRAPHY
Archaeologists, among others Jean Maury, have fully and scientifically explored the Marseilles shelter (located in the Laugerie Basse shelter) and they have taken out all of its filling. An extraordinary example of it is the stratigraphic section that helps us better visualize the various layers, hence the various levels of human occupancy. The lower part of the section represents the first human occupancy period: the shelter progressively attracted its first inhabitants who left traces of their lifestyle: flints, bones, charcoals, etc. The shelter was then filled by natural elements such as, soil or stones (fallen) from the cliff. These various layers resemble a millefeuille.
